Atheist and Agnostic Pro-Life League

Well, they're wrong about God. But they're very right about abortion! And it's always nice to be able to smash the "Pro-life people are all Christian fanatics!" bigotry.

Found the following story in the online version of the Modesto Bee:

Gianna Jessen came into the world as a surprise. Her 17-year-old mother knew she was pregnant. She also knew she didn't want to be. She underwent an abortion procedure, having toxic saline solution injected into the womb during the third trimester.

Jessen, then in the womb for 7½ months, spent 18 hours in the solution. "It burns the baby inside and out," she said. "(The mother) is to deliver a dead baby within 24 hours." But when a 2-pound Jessen emerged, she was alive.

"I did not die that day," Jessen said. "I was delivered alive in a Los Angeles County abortion clinic in a room full of teenage girls who had already had the saline injections and were feeling their children die inside of them."

... "She is a living example of an unborn child being a child and not being a thing, a glob, an unidentified piece of nothing," Shatswell said.

... "My biological parents made some really poor choices," she said. "I forgive them for what they did (but) I live every day with the result of the 'choice' that my biological mother made 27 years ago. So it's ridiculous to think our choices on a moment-by-moment basis only affect us. They always affect someone else, for good or ill."

... Jessen is sometimes unprepared for the grief that pours out from others when they hear her story. "Women who have had abortions have come up to me crying, saying, 'I wish I had never done this. I had no idea the pain I would live with for the rest of my life,'" she said.

  1. wow....... vry cool article. and i totally learned, like, all of that? yeah, just about. i didn't know that could happen after a baby was treated for abortion. and i didn't really realize that a toxic solution was used like that or anything.... wow. thanks for sharing :-) i think educating people on the process and the long-term effects (particularly emotional) of having an abortion is most important today, because i think that sooner or later it will be allowed, and the mother will get to choose if she wants it done. so it's important to help her make the decision based on her values and understanding versus anxiety because she is a teen (or whatever anxieties the expecting women might be facing).

i hope classes are going well for you, maggie :-) ttyl

    ~~to any/all readers, not solely maggie ;-) ~~

..... personally, i think that it should be a mother's choice simply because i feel like a hypocrite otherwise; my argument against abortion would include that God is planning your child... a classic example if you've ever heard it is of Beethoven... but if that is the case, then every time that someone uses any form of birth protection at all or even every time that a couple who was planning on spending the night together in bed ends up not doing so out of anger from an argument with each other (we often lose sight of God's plans for us when we are angry) would then cause God's "plan" to not come true. so then it must be within His plan for there to not be a child in certain circumstances...

therefore my main point about abortion becomes: if a woman understands everything that results from having an abortion and still wants to go through with it for whatever reason and live with that pain and/or unknowing for her entire life, she must therefore either not care about a thing besides her own perfect present illusions OR she has been given the strength by God that there is something else He has in store for her and she needs to work through the consequences of not giving birth to fulfill what He has in mind. how is man supposed to predict God's general plans and make a law? more important would be that women get the proper education to make the decisions. and if the said woman isn't Christian, or religious, that doesn't necessarily mean that her strength isn't coming from God. in fact that often seems to be the case in everyone, proclaimed Christians or not: that we get this unknown strength or passion from something, and just don't put two and two together in the sense that it is what God wants to have happen in our lives.

anyway, that's sorta what's going on in my mind. but it's based more on feelings and thoughts i've had rather than scripture, which isn't really good. so i might see it differently after studying it or hearing what someone else's views are, etc... but just thought it might be a different/interesting twist at looking at it for whoever is reading this :-) and perhaps make us ponder just how much we are missing of God's plans for us by allowing ourselves to be angry instead of moving on and forgiving the way Jesus has taught.

(giving someone the benefit of the doubt for cutting you off in traffic is still forgiveness! replaying the event over and over after it’s happened and speaking angrily about it takes so many precious moments away from life and the glories and joys of what God has created. there are so many small examples like this one that happen every day to us, not even taking into account the more serious and difficult ones we come across.)
