Happy Laetare Sunday

That's "Rejoice" Sunday, oh ye who know no Latin :)

It's a time to rejoice, first, because we've only got two Sundays until Easter. A similar occasion takes place two Sundays before Christmas.

Secondly, if you're paying attention to the Gospel readings (ehhhh and I hope you are) this Sunday's reading was John 3:16, one of the most famous passages in the Bible. "For God so loved the world..." etc. Now that is a reason to rejoice.

Priests are permitted to put away the penitential purple for this day and don rose vestments. This didn't happen at my church - I think the priest is too young to have a really extensive vestment collection. Nice ones can get pretty expensive.

In the Diocese of Rome, however, Papa was all decked out in rose.
